Creating a Twitter Account
Twitter is a micro-blogging site, allowing you to follow and connect with just about anyone in the world (as long as they have a Twitter handle). This is arguably the most important social media outlet to use, as interaction is done in real-time and rarely needs permission granted to follow or talk to others.
Step One: Go to the Twitter sign up page.
Step Two: Enter your full alias name for easy search. Enter your email address used for talktome.com. Enter a password. Choose your user name! This should be an easy handle that is similar to your name. If it’s taken, look at the Twitter suggestions underneath the username box. Don’t make it too hard to remember (not many numbers)! Click the yellow “Create my account” box.
Note: You can change your user name later if you think of something better or more relevant, but avoiding doing this often or at all if possible. It confuses other users!
Step Three: Here you start following people. Start within the company circle. Follow Talktome, follow @emmmmja, HM4Her, and other users. You can add people that will be relevant to your persona. After you have at least five, you can proceed to the next button where they will ask you to follow five more people.
Step Four: Here they ask you to upload your contacts. Be careful here, as you don’t want to add your grandmother or intern co-worker from five years ago (unless for some reason you really do). Remember that this is your professional account, so choose the followers accordingly.
Note: You can skip this step as shown below!
Step Five: Upload whatever picture you want to represent you. And write a description of your persona! You have 160 characters (the standard character count that Twitter allows for tweets) in which to represent you, so make it quirky.
Now you can start Tweeting. You can add background images to your page, location and website to your profile description, all of that is found in Settings. Remember to follow and interact! The more you interact, the more followers you get. We recommend following 25-30 users by the end of your first week.
